What the Powers had been planning when They had first given Their power to mortals and started them on the endless path of setting the world aright, even the peridexis couldn't begin to fathom.

(But it did. When, amidst the humming of spells and collisions of subatomic particles and the background chortle the laugh of the Big Bang had dimmed down to, it considered the lack of companion in its own silence-)

Working at cross purposes to the Power that had invented Entropy was, of course, always a challenge, but not one the peridexic effect faced directly. No, its role was strictly that of support. Where a wizard used a spell, it, too would be.

But no wizard uses spells in all purposes - at least, not formal ones - and it was true that it was good that it was so.

But all the same, it was nice to be needed. To be useful. To bring a particular strife to a peaceful end just so-

And yet.

And yet, there would be a time - beyond Time, but the peridexis was still aware it was real - where it wouldn't be needed anymore.

The Powers Themselves had seen to that, what with the Reintegration, and doubtless They were aware of the consequences.

Well, most of them; ineffable as They were, even They still admitted occasionally to a lack of omniscience.

Again, perhaps that was for the best-
